Rural Energy for America Program: How to Tap into Federal Grants for Rural Solar Customers

There are unique programs and funding opportunities available to agricultural producers and rural businesses looking to go solar. This session will explore the USDA Rural Energy for America Program, a grant and loan program that can cover up to 50% of the cost of a renewable energy project. We’ll cover best practices for identifying viable projects and submitting competitive grant applications. The panel will also share available technical assistance for pre-development and grant-writing support.

Commercializing new technology and solutions in the solar and storage industry is tough, but the landscape for clean tech startup support has changed in the past four years. How has the influx of federal funding into the industry and increased private investment impacted the Pacific NW cleantech startup ecosystem?   • about Ryan Sheehy founded Fleet Development to build a bridge between the renewable energy and multifamily affordable housing industries. The idea for the company’s mission came after finishing a 20-year career with the Marines, moving back to Enterprise, Oregon, and joining the top-tier affordable housing management company, Viridian Management. While working with Viridian as an organizational leadership and structure consultant, he helped develop new methods to overcome obstacles preventing adoption of solar and its benefits for affordable properties and tenants. Since 2017 he has been an Oregon Community Solar stakeholder representing low-income and affordable multifamily housing, while developing innovative affordable housing solar projects in Oregon and other states. Ryan is currently an executive board member for the Oregon Solar and Storage Industry Association.

In this session, we will discuss the essential paperwork required for your organization to join and benefit from the On-the-Job Training (OJT) program. Following the session, our team will be available to assist employers in completing the necessary documentation to achieve OJT certification.

We will also provide an example of skills that can be learned while on-the-job and outline the financial reimbursement process associated with training an OJT candidate currently employed in the solar industry. Participants are encouraged to bring your questions and an open mind as we explore the opportunities available through the OJT program.
